Laysan Albatross

We trekked through sand, heat and unpaved dirt terrain to see the majestic Laysan albatross of Oahu, Hawaii. Up in the north east tip of the island, Ka’ena point, far away from the bustling Waikiki beach is an oasis where the birds nest in peace.

From afar they look like the seagulls we see in Vancouver, but once you see them in person, up close, they are much larger in size with very different features. The most distinct feature you will see are their natural smokey eye makeup.

We were also lucky to observe a dance performance, where they would bow at each other for courtship. It was funny because we were the audience to this intimate ceremony in addition to a newly hatched fluffy juvenile chick.
