On a recent evening walk in Stanley Park, we were watching Great Blue Herons. They are common in Vancouver; there is a nesting site in Stanley Park. Several of them were treading the water’s edge in the Lost Lagoon.
Herons have good eye-sight, are very still, and have strong and flexible necks. These traits are excellent for catching unsuspecting fish below the water. The heron lurches into the perfect spot and waits. Suddenly, its neck snaps into extension, the head thrusts into the water, and snaps its beak. And there’s a fish in its mouth.
